Waterbury, Conn. - The 2018 campaign came to an abrupt close for Georgian Court University Friday as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular-season champions fell to #4 Caldwell University, 2-1, at Municipal Stadium in the first game of the CACC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament semifinals.
The setback ends the #1-seed Lions' quest for a repeat title as GCU concludes the year with a 13-4-1 overall mark. The Cougars (11-6-1) will now take on the winner of #2 Goldey-Beacom College and #3 Holy Family University in the CACC championship game, which will take place Sunday at Post University.
All-CACC First-Team selection,
Anissia Fucci, put Georgian Court ahead at the 22-minute mark of the first half when the junior, shooting from the far right, floated a tally into the upper left corner of the Caldwell cage. The GCU surplus would hold until 33:35 as Caldwell's
Gina Alfano (Jr.-Union, N.J.) knotted the game at 1-all after knocking in a loose ball after an initial diving save by Lions' goalkeeper,
Natalie Axelsson.
The stalemate snapped in the 58th minute (57:23) as
Meghan Grundhauser (Jr.-Easton, Pa.) connected on a
Jordan Madrid (So.-Cherry Hill, N.J.) helper to provide what would be the game-winner for the victorious Cougars.
Georgian Court dominated the shots column, 17-5 (9-3 SOG), but could not find an equalizer over the remaining 32:37.
Jamie-Lee Bamford (Fr.-Braintree, UK) stood strong in the Caldwell net, registering eight saves in the postseason triumph. Axelsson, the CACC Goalkeeper of the Year, grabbed a lone save in the sophomore's final start of the season.
