Philadelphia, Pa.- Trailing by 19 points midway through the second quarter, the Georgian Court University women's basketball squad refused to fold as the Lions fell short Wednesday evening at Chestnut Hill College, 73-67.
The Griffins (15-8, 11-3 CACC) outscored its guest, 22-10, in the first quarter, and increased its lead to a game-high surplus of 32-13 with 5:58 remaining in intermission. Trailing by 15 points 1:33 into the third period (41-26), the Lions darted on a 23-6 run, capped by a
Jaelyn Tweedy lay-up at the 2:46 mark to cut the deficit to just two (49-47). A Tweedy three-ball off a fastbreak with 10 seconds remaining in the frame made the score 56-52 with Chestnut Hill still holding the lead heading into the fourth.
A
Carna Prokic three-pointer at 5:18 in the fourth provided the Lions their first lead of the second half (63-62). Following a Tweedy free throw that tied the game at 64 (3:53), a layup by Chestnut Hill's
Tomiaya Graham (Sr.-Miami, Fla.) (3:26) put the home team ahead for good as the Griffins proceeded to outscore its foe, 7-3, the rest of the way to seal the victory.
"I really loved our effort tonight ... we fought," stated Georgian Court head coach,
Jazz Perazic. "The game was exciting. We did have some unfortunate turnovers at crucial times. Turnovers eventually cost us the game. Chestnut Hill's defense bothered us early. We were rushing and missing easy lay-ups. On a positive note, I saw big improvement on defense by us. We must continue to work on defense as a team. What I want to see now is continuous improvement. We must not take any steps backwards."
Four Griffins reached double-digits in the scoring column, led by
Jaeda Wildgoose (Jr.-Somerset, N.J.) with her team-best 17 points. For the Lions, Tweedy carried the team with 21 points and 12 boards (four assists, two blocks, two steals), good enough for the senior's second double-double off the year.
Jess Placher poured in 11 points, to go along with three assists and two steals, while
Alba Herrero-Gomez (three blocks) and
Destiny Thompson ( nine rebounds, two blocks) knocked home 10 points apiece.
GCU (4-18, 2-13 CACC) returns to the floor on Tuesday, February 13 for a 6:00 p.m. home game vs. Holy Family University. The Lions lost the last cat fight vs. the Tigers (92-68) back on January 3 in Philadelphia.
