Monday Mashers! Lions Slug Their Way to Softball Sweep of Findlay & Bentley

Clermont, Fla.- The Georgian Court University softball squad slugged its way to a dramatic two-game sweep Monday on day two of the PFX Spring Games as the Lions earned big-time victories vs. the University of Findlay and Bentley University to improve to 5-4 on the year.

GCU secured its largest shutout win since 2014 (11-0 vs. Concordia-NY) in the opener as the Lions plated 10 runs on 10 hits in a five-inning blanking of Findlay. The scoring barrage began in the first frame, courtesy of a long solo home run off the bat of Caitlyn Hughes and a ribbie double from Samantha Salomon.

The Lions poured on four more tallies in the top of the third, highlighted by Salomon's run-inducing triple and an Elisa Lopez sacrifice fly, to make the score 6-0 Georgian Court. GCU put the game out of reach with another four-spot in the fifth with Lindsey Fischbach (RBI double) and Hughes (sacrifice fly) providing the big swings.

Jessica O'Neil (2-2) went the distance to earn the win in the circle, scattering five hits (1 BB) in 5.0 innings of work. The junior southpaw, who has appeared in all nine games thus far, also struck out a pair in the contest.

The Oilers fall to 3-7 after the setback.

In the nightcap, Bentley (1-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first frame after a RBI single off from 3B Stephanie McQuaid. The surplus would hold until the bottom of the sixth when the Lions jolted the Falcons with a rattling of two-out thunder. After a lineout and groundout kicked off the inning, Malaya Black kept the Lions alive with a single through the left side which set the stage for Samantha Reilly as the junior mashed her team-leading third dinger over the fence in left-center to take a stunning 2-1 advantage.

Jennifer Tellefsen (3-1) held off Bentley in the top of the seventh en route to the complete-game victory (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB).

The Lions look to keep the mojo brewing on Tuesday when they take on Le Moyne College (9:00 a.m.) and #6 West Virginia Wesleyan College (11:30 a.m.).
