Davenport, Fla.- The Georgian Court University women's lacrosse squad concluded its two-game Florida trip on a sour note Wednesday afternoon as the Lions suffered a 21-9 setback to nationally-ranked Mercy College in a game hosted by Northeast Regional Park.
The Lions (1-4) held strong early in the first half as GCU trailed by only two (6-4) 4:57 into the contest. The Mavericks then proceeded to gallop away with six straight goals to take a commanding 12-4 lead at the 10:50 mark. After riding into intermission with a 16-7 surplus, Mercy left the Lions in the dust with five more tallies in the second stanza, en route to a perfect 5-0 record on the young year.
Mercy out-shot its foe by a margin of 39-23 (31-19 shots-on-goal) and controlled the draw, 25-6.
Hunter Isnardi dominated the action with nine goals, two assists and 16 draw controls for the Mavericks.
Mary Mackie and
Katherine Sanchez each registered four goals and an assist in the win while
Grace Davidson contributed a hat trick and a helper in the victory.
As for the Lions,
Samantha Fernandez topped the team with four goals in the effort.
Xena Valenzuela dished two goals and two assists.
Arianna Quinlan collected a pair of goals and a helper.
GCU now returns north and will next take the field on Saturday as the Lions host Kutztown University at 1:00 p.m. in the team's 2018 home opener.
