Lions Return to Win Column With Pair of Regional Victories in Friday Florida Action

Clermont, Fla.- Georgian Court University snapped a four-game Florida skid with flair Friday as the Lions plated 18 runs in a two-game regional sweep of the University of Bridgeport and Mercyhurst University on day five of the 2018 PFX Spring Games.

In the opener, Bridgeport plated an unearned run in both the third and fourth frames before the Lions unleashed the fury on the Purple Knights by scoring four runs in the fifth inning, and and five more sixth, en route to an eventual 9-4 triumph.

Samantha Reilly, batting .511 on the season (24-for-47), brought in five of GCU's runs with the swing of her mighty club, courtesy of a two-run dinger in the fifth and a three-run double in the six. Caitlin Hughes (2-for-3) brought in two with a ribbie double and single. Samantha Salomon enjoyed a 3-for-4 effort in the win.

Taylor Baloga shined in the circle as the sophomore registered her first win of the year (1-2) with the solid start (6.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K).

The second contest started out as a slugfest as both Mercyhurst and the Lions brought in four runs apiece after the initial inning of action.

The stalemate held strong until Elisa Lopez and Marissa Trezza brought home a run each with clutch singles to give GCU a 6-4 lead after four. The Lions' lumber broke the game wide open in the fifth, courtesy of  back-to-back jacks from Salomon (two-run shot) and Reilly (solo).

Mercyhurst's Sarah Koscho made things interesting in the top of the seventh as her three-run long ball put the Lakers (1-14) to within two at 9-7.

Jessica O'Neil (3-3) earned the victory out of the GCU bullpen, yielding two runs (1 ER) on four hits (1K) in her 5.1 innings of work.

Hughes (3-for-4) registered three of the Lions' 13 hits in the win while Lopez (2-for-4), Reilly (2-for-4) and Malaya Black (2-for-4) each posted a pair of knocks.

Georgian Court (7-8), now 5-5 in Florida, close out the 12-game Sunshine State slate Saturday with a twin-bill vs. Molloy College (1:30/3:30).
