Lakewood, N.J.- On a day the Georgian Court University men's lacrosse program celebrated its senior class (
Jeffrey Galatola,
John Kicak, and
Michael Saladino) during a special pregame Senior Day ceremony, the Lions treated their faithful fans to a thriller as GCU held off visiting Dominican College, 8-6, to improve to 3-0 (7-6 overall) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.
The win keeps the Lions atop the CACCÂ standings as GCU battles for a prime seeding in the first-ever CACCÂ Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament, hosted by Georgian Court on April 27 and 29. The Chargers slide to 2-10 (1-2 CACC) after the Saturday setback.
With the visitors clutching a slight 2-1 advantage at the 8:49 mark of the first period, the Lions pounced for three straight to go ahead by a 4-2 count with 11:44 to go in the second. Dominican, also hungry for the conference victory, charged back by netting three of the game's next four tallies to even the score at 5-all with 11:16 remaining before the end of regulation.
GCU's senior goal-slinging duo of Galatola and Saladino took matters into their own hands in the waning minutes as the tandem teamed to tally three straight goals in the final 4:29 to go ahead 8-5 and secure the well-earned conference "W".
Both players topped the Lions with four points apiece (three goals and an assist) while
Tanner Lee and
Brandon Razler netted GCU's other scores. GCU outshot the Chargers, 48-40, with a 28-20 shots-on-goal margin.
Austin Geissel registered 14 clutch saves in the Georgian Court net to improve to 7-5 on the season. Dominican's
Joseph Fabiilli countered with 20 saves in his complete-game effort.
The Lions now take to the road for their final two regular-season matches of the year, starting with a 7:00 p.m. CACCÂ showdown at Chestnut Hill College Tuesday evening.
