Late Minute Surge Dooms Georgian Court Women as New Haven Nips Lions, 3-2

Pleasantville, N.Y. - In a contest that started so splendidly, the night took a wicked turn for the worse as the Georgian Court University women's soccer squad relinquished a second-half surplus, ultimately falling to the University of New Haven, 3-2, Thursday evening in a contest hosted by Pace University.

Georgian Court (0-1) kicked off the 2018 campaign in grand fashion as sophomore Erin Wimmer connected on a Kaitlin Lister helper just 1:36 after the opening whistle. The lead would hold until the 39th minute when New Haven's Emily Morello (Sr.-Kings Park, N.Y.) found the back of the net at the 28:25 mark to knot the score at 1-1.

With no additional scoring in the first half, the stalemate stood until 63:05 when Lister put the Lions back ahead after burying a Heather Arbachesky feed. The GCU lead would hold for just under seven minutes as UNH's Emily Bergold (Sr.- Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) evened the ledger at 2-2 with 21:05 remaining in regulation.

With overtime looking inevitable, Morello had other plans as the senior shocked the Lions by slipping in her second strike of the game with just 59 ticks remaining (89:01) to pull off the stunning victory for the Chargers (1-0).

Paige Davis (So.-Wilkes Barre, Pa.) went the distance for the win as the keeper collected six saves for New Haven. GCU's Natalie Axelsson secured three saves of her own over 90:00. UNH out shot its foe, 14-12, but the Lions put more attempts on frame, 8-7.

The Lions takes Friday off before returning to action Saturday evening with a 6:30 p.m. match vs. the host-Setters.
