Lee, Thompson Author Double-Doubles as Lions Host Wilmington in CACC Tilt

Lakewood, N.J. - Taking to the home hardwood for the first time since December 1, Georgian Court University welcomed Wilmington University to the Wellness Center for a special 1:00 p.m.weekday matinee Wednesday in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) divisional women's basketball action.

In a high-scoring affair, the Lions fell just short to the Wildcats, 84-81, suffering their first conference setback of the season (2-1 CACC, 2-10 overall). Wilmington walks away with its second victory in 2018-19 (2-10, 2-2 CACC).

GCU owned a slim 9-7 lead 3:45 into the contest before a Macy Robinson (Gr.-Wilmington, Del.) three-pointer at the 5:59 mark provided the victors a lead they would not relinquish. The Wildcats closed out the period with a 24-18 advantage and coasted into intermission ahead, 49-37.

Down by 12 (74-62) with 8:12 left in regulation, the Lions sliced the deficit to just one point (80-79), courtesy of a 17-6 run, culminating with a pair of Jada Atchison free throws with just 0:51 remaining. Unfortunately, that would be as close as GCU could cut it as Wilmington drained four straight free throws the rest of the way to seal the win.

Robinson paced the Wildcats with a game-high 28 points, shooting 9-for-19 from the floor over 38 minutes. Teammate Nyree Grant (Sr.-Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) buried 24 points of her own, complemented by 10 boards, to secure the double-double. Jadyn Whitsitt (So.-Fort Washington, Md.) contributed 16 points in the winning effort.

Atchison, for the second time this season, topped the Lions with 26 points, going 10-of-21 from the field in her 38 minutes of action. Safiyyah Lee registered her team-leading second double-double of the year with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Destiny Thompson also went the double-double route for GCU with 18 points and 10 boards while Ivona Krakic deposited 10 points of her own in the effort.

The Lions take to the road Saturday with a visit to Caldwell University (1:00 p.m.) in CACC competition.
