Caldwell, N.J. - For the first time in a decade, Georgian Court University departed Caldwell University victorious as the Lions upended the Cougars, 72-62, to improve to an impressive 3-1 (3-9 overall) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball competition.
Saturday's triumph marked the Georgian Court's first win on Caldwell's Corino Court since stunning the Cougars, 60-58, back on Jan. 31, 2009. The loss drops the home team to 3-9 (3-2 CACC).
The game got off to an inauspicious beginning for GCU as the Cougars pounced for a 21-10 lead in the initial quarter. The Lions rebounded in the second, outscoring Caldwell, 21-12, to cut the deficit to 33-31 heading into the intermission. Caldwell countered in the third frame by edging its guest, 18-16, layering its lead to 51-47 heading into the fourth-and-final period.
After a
Paula Dits (Fr.-Alicante, Spain) jumper made the score 53-47 Caldwell, the Georgian Court offense exploded for a 14-2 run, capped by a
Jada Atchison three-pointer, to take a 61-55 lead with 4:27 left in regulation. GCU proceeded to pour it on, outscoring the Cougars 11-7 over the remaining minutes to secure the clutch conference win.
Atchison continues to star in the scoring column as the redshirt junior paced the Lions with her 19 points, which included four three-pointers, over 35 total minutes.
Destiny Thompson followed with 16 points on the day to go along with four steals.
Safiyyah Lee provided yet another balanced attack for GCU with 11 points, nine boards and three blocks.
Tina Lebron (Jr.-Manalapan, N.J.) topped Caldwell with a game-high 20 points.
Andie Lennon (Sr.-Secaucus, N.J.) trailed her teammate with 13 points, followed by
Alessia Smaldone (Gr.-Malnate, Italy) with 12 points of her own.
