Lakewood, N.J. -
Destiny Thompson's 1,000th career point highlighted yet another solid showing for Georgian Court University as the Lions cruised to a 79-58 home win over Bloomfield College Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball action.
GCU, winners of three straight (and four of their last five), now have seven conference triumphs for the first time since the 2012-13 campaign. The Bears slide to 4-15 on the season (3-7 CACC).
Bloomfield began the contest on a positive note as the Bears built a five-point lead (13-8) with 4:30 to go in the first quarter. The Lions picked up the tempo soon after as Georgian Court mounted a 10-4 spurt to close the stanza with a slim 18-17 lead.
The Bears opened the second period with a pair of baskets to go back ahead, 21-18, at the 8:50 mark before GCU exploded for a 22-4 onslaught to take a cozy 40-25 surplus into the break. Thompson, entering the day needing 18 points to reach her personal milestone, almost accomplished the feat in the first half by securing her second double-double of the season in her first 19 minutes of action (14 points, 10 rebounds).
Thompson came out of the locker room to net the Lions' first basket of the second half, setting the stage for her memorable moment, which would come at 7:41 of the third quarter with a lay-up. Coach Perazic would immediately call a quick timeout to permit the senior star an opportunity to celebrate with her ecstatic teammates.
With the outcome seemingly decided, Georgian Court would proceed to lead by no less than 16 points the rest of the way, and increased its advantage to a high-water mark of 28 (71-43) with 5:44 to go in regulation.
Carna Prokic deposited a season-high 21 points in the GCU home win, shooting a torrid 8-for-11 from the floor. Thompson ended the afternoon with 19 points and 11 boards while
Safiyyah Lee netted 14 points in her 29 minutes.
Nerea Brajac provided a balanced line consisting of nine points, five assists and four steals.
Deja McKenzie (Sr.-Baltimore, Md.) provided a team-best 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bears.
GCU now prepares to take to the road and visit #9 University of the Sciences Wednesday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. The Lions lost to the Devils in their previous showdown, 79-58, earlier this month (Jan. 8) in the Wellness Center.
