Paddy Casey (So.-Scranton, Pa.) three-point buzzer-beater at the conclusion of the second half kept visiting University of the Sciences alive as the Devils took full advantage of its new life, outscoring Georgian Court University, 13-7, in the extra session and, ultimately, escaping the Wellness Center with an improbable 84-78 CACC divisional road win Tuesday night.
The Lions (2-12, 1-4 CACC), winners of two straight at home vs. USciences (5-9, 2-3 CACC) coming into Tuesday, thoroughly outplayed the Devils in the first stanza, leading by as many as 16 points after a
Caleb Bowser layup put the home team up, 20-9, at the 7:23 mark of the half. The visitors proceeded to outscore GCU by a slim 19-15 margin the rest of the way, but the Lions still owned a seven-point cushion (35-28) heading into the break.
Up by eight (44-36) 4:31 into the second half, the Devils mounted a 13-2 run to come all the way back and take a 49-46 lead of its own with 11:14 remaining. A
Tanner Kerr (Sr.-Avalon, N.J.) jumper with 4:36 left put the visitors up by six points, 63-57, before the Lions iced the Devils with a 9-2 spurt, reclaiming the lead, 66-65, with 2:02 to go.
After a Casey three-ball put USciences ahead, 68-66, with 51 seconds on the clock, the Lions responded with a
Sean Barksdale three-pointer (0:24) and a pair of
Kristian Alexander free throws (0:04) to make the score 71-68, setting the stage for Casey's theatrics.
Brendan Crawford (Sr.-Haddonfield, N.J.) paced the victors with his team-best 24 points over 43 minutes of action. Casey finished with 21 points and a game-high six assists.
Sean Simon (Fr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) buried a game-best four three-pointers, adding to his 18 total points, while Kerr authored a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards to go along with three blocks.
Bowser provided an inspirational performance for the Lions, depositing a season-high 33 points in the effort. The junior has now totaled 81 points over his last three outings, and eclipsed the 30-point plateau twice in less than a week (30 vs. Wilmington, Jan. 2). Bowser now ranks second in the CACC with his average of 20.0 points-per-game.
Bryce Council followed wih 16 points and five helpers in 35 minutes for the Lions.
GCU returns to the floor Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. CACC home affair vs. Dominican College.
