Waterbury, Conn. - Georgian Court University's courageous postseason journey came to an emotional end Sunday morning as the #5 Lions fell just short to #3 Post University, 1-0, in the 2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament title game.
Francesco Perienelli (Iazisa, Italy) provided Post the only offense it would need as the sophomore sent in a feed from tournament MVP,
Sergio Diaz (Jr.-Madrid, Spain), off an initial free kick just 4:33 into the match. A costly red card infraction for the Lions at 26:46 would give the Eagles a man advantage for the remainder of the contest, limiting the Lions' opportunities on the offensive end.
Jamie Hickey, despite the circumstances, played sensationally in net for GCU as the sophomore collected five saves in his complete-game effort. The Eagles owned a 16-6 shot advantage in the victory.
Hickey, along with
Robert Biele,
Javel Dawkins, and
Daniel Vicente represented Georgian Court on the All-Tournament Team.
The Lions conclude the 2019 campaign with an overall mark of 9-11-1. Post (14-3-3), with its second-straight CACC crown, earns an automatic bid in next week's NCAA Championship Tournament regionals. The Eagles have now eliminated GCU from the postseason in each of the last two years after Georgian Court upended its rival in shootout fashion in 2016, earning the Lions' their lone conference title.
