Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. -
Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor continues to provide Georgian Court University much-needed leadership on the hardwood as the junior authored his first double-double while sporting the royal and gold (25 points, 11 rebounds) Saturday in a 64-60 men's basketball non-conference setback at Mercy College.
The Lions opened the afternoon by netting the first five points of the game. The Mavericks wiped away the deficit by galloping for a 6-0 run of their own to take a one-point advantage 4:18 into the contest.
With the score knotted at 11-all (11:16), GCU left Mercy (1-5) in the dust with a 10-0 sprint, capped by a
Shane Williams three-pointer at the 6:27 mark of the half. For the second-straight outing, the Lions were unable to hold on to a double-digit advantage as Mercy mounted a 13-3 sprint of its own to tie the game at 24-24 with 1:46 to go.
Georgian Court closed the half on a high note with a slim 29-26 lead heading into intermission.
After a back-and-forth beginning to the second stanza, the Lions enjoyed a pair of nine-point surpluses, the second coming at 8:31 when a
Justin Figueroa layup put the visitors up, 52-43. The tide proceeded to turn from this point forward as Mercy exploded to outscore GCU, 17-0, over the next 4:19 to go up, 60-52, with 4:12 remaining in regulation.
GCU cut the Mavericks' lead to two points on a pair of occasions the rest of the way, but the Lions were unable to climb back into the black.
Bryan Griffin (RS-Jr., Pomona, N.Y.) paced the victors with 17 points and eight boards over 33 minutes.
Nakeem Hamilton (Jr.-Bronx, N.Y.) dropped in 11 points, hitting 7-of-8 from the charity stripe, while grabbing seven rebounds in the win.
Ortiz-Traylor drained eight of his 16 efforts from the floor for the Lions (0-4), while also nailing 7-of-8 free throws.
Davon Floyd added 10 points and five boards in his 21 minutes of action.
Georgian Court returns home to host Queens College (NY) on Wednesday for a special Thanksgiving Eve matinee (1:00 p.m.) in the Wellness Center.
