Lakewood, N.J. - The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad owns a four-game winning streak for the first time in program history as the Lions held strong vs. Millersville University before eventually sending off the visiting Marauders, 72-67, Tuesday evening in NCAA Division II non-conference action.
GCU, now 4-4 after starting the year with four consecutive setbacks, tops a program from the Pennsylvania State Athlete Conference (PSAC) for only the second time, and first since edging Clarion University, 69-68, over five years ago (11/15/14).
Trailing 11-10 with 13:29 left in the initial half of action, Millersville (4-5) mounted a 14-7 spurt to go up by eight (25-17) with 7:16 left before the break. The Marauders held off the home team the remainder of the session as MU pocketed a 35-29 surplus heading into intermission.
Down 37-29 at the 19:32 mark of the second, Georgian Court rallied to tie the contest at 37-37 (17:27) thanks to an 8-0 sprint. Four more stalemates would follow before Millersville authored yet another eight-point advantage as a
Brandon Craig (So.-Jackson, Tenn.) layup at 9:54 made it 56-48 Marauders.
Again, the Lions showed tremendous heart to erase the deficit as a pair of
Jelani Jackson free throws with 7:18 left not only capped a 9-0 run for GCU, but provided the royal and blue a 57-56 lead.
Caden Najdawi's (Jr.-Chesterfield, Va.) lay-in at 6:12 put Millersville back up by one (58-57) before a
Bryce Council jumper 23 seconds later pushed the Lions ahead, 59-58, and provided GCU a lead they would not again relinquish.
Despite shooting 51% from the floor, Millersville could not overcome its tendency for the turnover as the Marauders committed 25 miscues on the night (resulting in 22 GCU points).
Four Lions collected double-digit scoring efforts, led by
Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor and his game-high 16 points. Council posted a new season-best with his 13 points while Jackson and
Justin Figueroa contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. Both Figueroa and Jackson shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Khari Williams (Jr.-Norristown, Pa.) paced Millersville with 15 points.
James Sullivan (Jr.-Grottoes, Va.) added 14 points in 40 minutes of action.
Georgian Court returns to CACCÂ play this Thursday evening with an 8:00 p.m. divisional home contest vs. Jefferson.
