Lakewood, N.J. - In what looked like the making of a runaway win, thanks to a 22-9 first quarter showing and an 11-point fourth-quarter surplus, Georgian Court University was unable to seal the deal as a relentless Chestnut Hill College squad utilized a late 11-2 surge to overtake the Lions and steal a 73-67 road win Tuesday night in CACC women's basketball action.
After coming out of the first period trailing by 13, the Griffins (2-5, 1-0 CACC) opened the second quarter with a 19-4 run to inch to within just two points (28-26) with 2:15 left before the break. The Lions' lead held on by a mere thread heading into intermission as a
Bri Hewlett (So.-North Wales, Pa.) three-pointer put Chestnut Hill down by just one (35-34) at halftime.
CHC came all the way back to knot the score at 40-40 3:56 into the third after beginning the period with a 6-5 push. The Griffins continued to apply the pressure as a Hewlett lay-in provided the road warriors their first lead of the evening (47-46) with 1:05 to go in the stanza. The Lions finally showed some second-half life as a
Nerea Brajac layup at 0:02 closed a GCU 6-0 run and put the home team ahead by five (52-47) going into the fourth.
A
Tian Addison three-pointer led to a seemingly-comfortable 60-49 Georgian Court surplus with 8:18 remaining in regulation before Chestnut Hill did the unthinkable, striking with a 14-2 sprint over the next 5:38 to take the lead, 63-62, after Hewlett hit on another three-ball with 2:40 to go. The Griffins never relented as CHC outscored its host, 10-5, the rest of the way and secured the always-clutch intra-divisional triumph.
Four Griffins posted double-digit scoring efforts, led by Hewlett with 17 points (23 minutes) off the Chestnut Hill bench.
Brajac certainly served as the Lions' star of the night as the junior collected a double-double effort consisting of 19 points and 10 boards, complemented by her six assists and five swipes.
Ivona Krakic authored a double-double of her own with 12 points and 10 rebounds (three blocks) while
