Women's Hoops Registers First 10-Win Season Since 08-09 With 84-57 Walloping of Wilmington

Newark, Del. -For the first time in a decade, the Georgian Court University women's basketball squad has reached double-digits in the win column as the Lions trounced host-Wilmington University, 84-57, Wednesday evening in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) divisional action.

The victory improves GCU's record to 10-12 overall and moves the third-place Lions to 10-4 in conference play, their first season with double-digit CACC tallies since 2002-03. Georgian Court last won 10 or more total games in 2008-09 when they posted a 13-14 mark.

GCU, seeking redemption for an 84-81 home loss to the Wildcats (5-17, 5-9 CACC) back on Jan. 2, got off on the right foot with a 21-14 lead after the initial 10 minutes of competition. The home team responded with a 21-10 showing in the second period, providing Wilmington a slim 35-31 lead heading into intermission.

Georgian Court exploded out of the break, outscoring its foe, 23-12, in the third frame to swing the surplus to its side at 54-47. The Lions refused to relent in the fourth-and-final period, opening the session with a mind-blowing 30-5 mega-run to take an insurmountable 84-52 lead with just 1:15 left in the game.

Jada Atchison topped the Lions' lineup with her game-high 22 points on the night, including four three-pointers, in her 37 minutes of play. Defensive Player of the Week, Safiyyah Lee (15 pts, 11 rebounds, four blocks), and Destiny Thompson (16 pts, 11 rebounds) each authored double-doubles in the win while Carna Prokic compiled 19 points, seven helpers, three steals, and five boards.

Nyree Grant (Sr.-Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) served has Wilmington's top-scorer with 21 points in the setback.

On the brink of its first postseason berth in 16 years (2002-03), Georgian Court will now visit Post University this Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. tip-off scheduled.
