Waterbury, Conn. –Georgian Court University women's basketball visited Post University Saturday afternoon as the Lions saw its modest three-game winning streak snapped after an 86-70 loss to the Eagles in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) inter-divisional action.
Entering the day with victories in six of its last seven outings, the Lions opened the contest with a 25-19 lead after a high-scoring first quarter of play. The GCU lead grew to nine points when a
Safiyyah Lee layup put the road team ahead, 30-21, with 8:23 remaining before the half.
Post proceeded to provide a 17-6 run, capped by a
Jessica Degree (Jr.-Yonkers, N.Y.) layup, to put the Eagles ahead, 38-36, with 2:21 to go before intermission.
Coming out of the break with a seven-point surplus (45-38), Post opened the third stanza on a 13-4 tear to take an insurmountable 16-point lead (58-42) at the 5:08 mark of the session.
The Eagles soared to a game-high lead of 19 points in the fourth period after a free throw by
Gabriela Middleton (Sr.-Coral Springs, Fla.) put Post up, 76-57, with just 2:05 left in regulation.
Five Post players eclipsed double-digits in the victory, led by
Melanie Polanco (Fr.-Meriden, Conn.) with a game-high 25 points. Middleton garnered 19 points for the Eagles while DeGree contributed a double-double performance of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Carna Prokic led the way for the Lions with her 17 points over 37 minutes.
Destiny Thompson drained 15 points in the GCU setback while
Ivona Karkic 11 points and a team-best five boards and three blocks.
GCU (10-13, 10-5 CACC) returns home to host #9 Jefferson Tuesday evening (6:00 p.m.) in the Wellness Center Arena.
