Georgian Court Snaps Postseason Drought With Last-Second Upset of #8 Jefferson

Lakewood, N.J. - A successful Carna Prokic three-point heave with seven-tenths of a second remaining in regulation not only upended the #8 team in the nation, Jefferson, but punched a postseason ticket for Georgian Court University for the first time in 16 years as the Lions shocked the Lady Rams, 74-73, Tuesday evening in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball action.

GCU last appeared in the CACC Championship Tournament during the 2002-03 campaign when still a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. On this night, the Lions improved to an impressive 11-5 in conference play (11-13 overall) after upending first-place Jefferson (23-2, 14-2 CACC).

No one could have predicted this outcome at the start as the Rams rallied for a hefty 29-14 lead after the first 10:00 of play. The Jefferson lead grew to a game-high 19 when a Jessica Kaminski (Sr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) lay-up at the 8:24 mark of the second period put the road team ahead, 33-14.

The Lions proceeded to launch into a 22-7 super run as Georgian Court sliced away all but four points of its deficit to head into intermission trailing, 40-36.  It was again Jefferson's turn to have a lopsided surplus in the third quarter as the Lady Rams rolled GCU, 21-11, to  return to a healthy advantage of 61-47.

Down by 14 heading into the fourth-and-final frame, the Lions began to methodically pick apart the Jefferson defense as GCU climbed to within five (67-62) after a Prokic three-pointer closed out a 15-6 spurt with 3.29 remaining.

A trio of free throws by Kaminski put the Lady Rams back up by eight (70-62) with 3:22 left in regulation. Up, 72-64, with only 2:40 to go, Georgian Court inched to within one point after Safiyyah Lee dropped in a lay-up at 00:34.

After a 30-second timeout by Jefferson with 18 seconds left, Caitlyn Cunningham (So.-Dresher, Pa.) connected on one of two free-throw attempts to take a slim 73-71 lead with only 13 seconds on the clock.

A Jefferson foul set up the miraculous final play as an inbound pass from Jada Atchison found the hands of Prokic, who ducked and weaved to find the open space and release the sweetest shot of Georgian Court's 15-year as an NCAA Division II program.

Prokic, after the evening's heroics, closed out the night with a team-high 19 points over 35 minutes of action. Destiny Thompson followed with 18 points while Atchison added 15, all of which came via the three-ball (5-for-7). Ivona Krakic contributed 10 points in the win. Lee finished the game with nine points and team-best nine boards.

Kaminski led the way for Jefferson in the setback with her game-high 20 points. Beverly Kum (Sr.-Hagerstown, Md.) authored a double-double consisting of 17 points and 14 boards while Cunningham contributed a more unorthodox version with 14 points and 12 steals.

Georgian Court last defeated Jefferson (formerly known as Philadelphia University) back on Feb. 16, 2017 by a score of 86-81 in the Wellness Center.

The Lions ride this high into Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. road game at Holy Family University.
