Women's Lacrosse Enjoys 18-7 Opening Day Victory at Millersville ... Barbella Dishes 100th Career Assist

Millersville, Pa. - The women's lacrosse season is officially underway as Georgian Court kick-started the 2019 campaign with an 18-7 non conference regional road victory Monday afternoon at Millersville University.

Winners of 13 games in each of the past two years, the two-time reigning conference champions are off on the right foot with a 1-0 start. The Marauders, also beginning its season, start at 0-1.

The Lions played from behind initially as Millersville netted the first two goals of the contest with scores at 27:47 and 27:27, respectively. GCU proceeded to chip off the rust and pour in 10 unanswered tallies, and 17 of the game's next 19 goals, to settle into a comfortable 17-4 surplus with 14:27 remaining in regulation.

Samantha Fernandez, the 2017 and 2018 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Year, appears to be campaigning for a third straight accolade as the senior secured a game-high six goals in the victory.

The GCU trio of Madison Heck, Arianna Quinlan and Amanda Marino followed Fernandez with hat tricks while Shaine Sauter poured in a pair of her own. Nicole Barbella dished seven assists in the triumph, the sixth of which was the 100th helper of the senior's stellar collegiate career.

All-Conference net-minder, Amber Neumann, rebounded nicely from the early 2-0 deficit as the senior shot-stopper secured 10 saves on 17 Millersville shots-on-goal (20 overall shots). The Lions let loose 35 total shots, 28 of which were on frame.

Georgian Court now prepares for its own home-opener, which takes place this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. vs. #5 West Chester University.
