Lakewood, N.J. - On a night Georgian Court University honored its senior quartet of
Nijiera Addison,
Alba Herrero-Gomez,
Carna Prokic, and
Destiny Thompson, Goldey-Beacom College arrived on the scene to crash the party as the visiting Lighting erased a 17-point deficit and took a late-minute lead before eventually succumbing to the host-Lions, 74-73, Wednesday in CACC divisional action.
The contest commenced seamlessly for Georgian Court as the home team jumped out to a commanding 9-0 lead. GBC snapped to its senses and outscored the Lions, 20-14, over the remaining 6:43 to cut the deficit to three (23-20) after the initial quarter.
GCU controlled the tempo in the second period, increasing the lead to a first-half high of 12 points after a
Jada Atchison three-pointer put the Lions ahead, 43-31, with just 1:43 to go before intermission. The outcome appeared to be highly predictable as Georgian Court breezed through the third quarter holding on to a double-digit lead the entire way, including a game-high 61-44 surplus with 4:19 remaining in the session.
Entering the the fourth-and-final quarter with a lead of 70-58, the weather took a turn over the final 10 minutes of action as the Lighting stunned GCU with a 12-0 zapping to tie the contest at 70-all with 4:15 left in regulation.
Another key three from Atchison at the 2:25 mark reclaimed a three-point cushion for the Lions. GBC's
Alanna Speaks (So.-Dover, Del.)and
Amanda McGrogan (Jr.-Mount Laurel, N.J.) responded with a pair of free throws each to give Goldey-Beacom its first lead of the game with just 1:20 to go (74-73).
Trailing by one point with seven seconds remaining, Atchison drew a foul and promptly poured in a pair of free throws to secure the Lions their second straight one-point home win and avoid the Senior Night stinker.
Thompson, in the final home game of her collegiate career, went out in style as the senior tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 boards.
Ivona Krakic followed with her first career double-double as the freshman netted 15 points to go along with 12 boards and five blocks.
Prokic, also in her home finale, collected 12 points, six rebounds and a quintet of assists and steals. Atchison's game-winning buckets from the charity stripe provided the junior 16 points in the victory.
McGrogan paced the Goldey-Beacom offense with a game-high 28 points, including 12-for-14 shooting from the free throw line.
Sarah Round (Fr.-Northampton, England) connected on 17 points for the Lightning while Speaks scored 16 points of her own in the loss.
Georgian Court (12-14, 12-6 CACC) will now close out the CACC regular season campaign this Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. tip scheduled at Felician University.
