Lakewood, N.J.- After earning its first national ranking earlier in the day, #25 Georgian Court University proved its worthiness as the Lions unloaded on visiting University of the Sciences, 10-0 ( 5 inn.) and 9-1 ( 6 inn.), Wednesday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action.
The twin-bill ,highlighted by threeÂ
Marissa Trezza home runs (two walk-off blasts), also featured a record-breaking moment for
Samantha Reilly as the All-American slugger slammed her 43rd and 44th career home runs while sporting the royal and gold to become the program's all-time leader in long balls.
GAME ONE
After three-and-a-half scoreless frames to commence the day's first contest, GCU snapped the stalemate with three unearned runs in the home half of the fourth, followed by a seven spot in the fifth, to secure the sixth mercy-rule rout for the Lions over their last 10 games.
The biggest blow came from Trezza who ended the contest with a grand slam, the junior's second game-ending homer of the season (3/16 vs. Nyack).
Caitlin Hughes enjoyed a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, including a ribbie single in the third and a two-run double in the fourth frame.
Jessica O'Neil allowed one hit, a lead-off single to
Gabrielle Simms (Fr.-Phoenixville, Pa.), as the Lions' ace cruised to the complete-game shutout victory for the Lions. The senior, now 8-1 on the season, permitted a pair of walks while striking out seven in the five-inning triumph. Â
Kaitlyn Gaynor (Sr.-Berlin, N.J.) suffered the loss (3.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, BB, 4 K).
GAME TWO
In the nightcap, the Lions pounced for three runs in the first, thanks to a
Samantha Salomon run-scoring single and a Reilly two-run shot to right, tying the Toms River, N.J. native with
Heather Walker (2005-08) atop the GCU home run ranks.
Two more runs came in for the home team in the following frame after a run-producing wild pitch and Trezza's second big fly of the day, a solo shot. After the Devils (2-14, 1-3 CACC) scooted across a run in the top of the third, Georgian Court regained the tally with an RBI ground out in the third before Reilly and Trezza teamed up for their third set of back-to-back bombs since Saturday to end the showdown in six.
Jennifer Tellefsen, in relief of GCU starter
Mikayla Gilgert, battled through four innings of work (3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) to earn the victory (4-0).
Megan Master (So.-Ventnor, N.J.) was stuck with the setback for the Devils after permitting six runs (6 ER) on eight hits and three free passes (1 K) over 2.2 innings pitched.
The 22-5 Lions (7-1 CACC), now 8-0 at home on SEI Investments Field, prepare to visit Post University this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for another conference double-dip.
