Waterbury, Conn.- Georgian Court University softball continues to rack up the victories as the #25 Lions pushed past Post University by the scores of 6-5 and 9-0 (5 inn.) Saturday afternoon to improve to an astounding 24-5 on the year, including a 9-1 mark in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition.
GAME ONE
After falling behind to the visiting Lions, 6-1, after five-and-a-half frames, the host-Eagles proceeded to plate a lone run in the home half of the fifth, and three more in the sixth, to slice the GCU surplus to 6-5.
Mikayla Gilgert (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K), the Lions' fourth pitcher of the contest, managed to push the visitors through a less-than-glamorous defensive showing in the sixth, before pitching a scoreless final stanza, to secure both a conference road win for the Lions and her first collegiate save.
Jessica O'Neil started for the victors as the senior yielded one run (1 ER) on three hits and a pair of free passes (1 K) to improve to 9-1 on the year.
Bridget Betley (So.-Fairfield, N.J.) fell to 2-3 for the Eagles (3.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, BB, 2 K).
Caitlin Hughes enjoyed her best game of the season atop the Lions' lineup as the 2018 CACC Rookie of the Year went 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBI, including a three-run homer (2nd of year), in the second inning.
Marissa Trezza ( 2-for-3) and
Malia Black (1-for-4) also registered ribbies for Georgian Court.
GAME TWO
The Lions, contradicting the University's core values, showed no mercy in the nightcap as GCU pounded Post with nine runs on eight hits and five fielding blunders by the Eagles to coast to yet another run-rule triumph (9th of season).Â
Trezza blasted a two-run homer (10th of year) to kick off the scoring in the first inning as the junior closes out a week for the ages with four long balls and 10 RBI over four total contests.
Eryka Springer unloaded on a three-run shot in the fifth as the lefty slugger now has six homers in just 37 total at-bats.
Gilgert returned for an encore performance in the contest, this time in starting role, as the freshman provided 4.2 innings of shutout softball (4 H) to bump her record to 9-3. Her eight strikeouts establishes a new career-high for the Lions' hurler.
Leyri Rivera (Jr.-Dover, N.J.) suffered the loss for the Eagles (2.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB) to drop to 0-2.
Georgian Court stays on the road as the Lions gear up to visit Chestnut Hill College Tuesday afternoon (2:30 p.m.) for another CACC doubleheader.
