Clermont, Fla. - Georgian Court University improves to a solid 8-2 (12-3 overall) in Sunshine State softball action as the Lions extended their winning streak to four Friday with triumphs over Assumption College (4-1) and the University of Texas at Tyler (6-5) at the PFX Spring Games.
GAME ONE
Aside from a run-inducing wild pitch in the bottom of the first,
Mikalya Gilgert was lights out in the circle for the Lions as the freshman finished off Assumption with six shutout innings en route to her fifth victory of the young season.
The reigning CACC Rookie of the Week permitted five hits and three walks (4 K) in the complete-game triumph.Â
GCU was able to get back the run it yielded in the first frame with a tally in the top of the second, courtesy of a two-out double from
Malia Black (2-for-3). An RBI single from
Samantha Salomon (1-for-4) and a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of
Samantha Reilly (2-for-2) made the score 3-1 Lions.
Malaya Black (2-for-3) brought around the final digit in the sixth after smashing a ribbie triple to left-center.
Mia Patriacca (Fr.-Newton, Mass.) slips to 2-2 for the Greyhounds after the setback (6.0 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 K).
GAME TWO
Breezing through four full with a 2-0 lead, things quickly got uncomfortable for the Lions in the top of fifth as Texas-Tyler swiped the lead with three runs on four hits. Georgian Court, proving its resiliency all week long, immediately countered with a pair in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead (4-3), thanks to a Reilly double and a
Marissa Trezza (3-for-3) run-scoring single.
The Lions' lead bumped up to 6-3 in the home half of the sixth after
Malia Black (single) and
Caitlin Hughes (double) brought around a run each.Â
Georgian Court's insurance tallies proved to be a wise investment in the top of the seventh.
Victoria Gonzales (Sr.-Elgin, Texas) opened the final frame with a booming double to center. Two outs followed, setting the stage for
Serena Saldivar (Sr.-Garland, Texas), who drilled a 3-2 pitch from Gilgert (forced into relief service back in the fifth) over the right-field wall to put the Patriots to within one.
Bobbie Beck replaced Gilgert in the circle and promptly plunked the first batters she faced before getting her third-and-final batter to ground out and secure the sweep for the Lions.
Gilgert went 2.1 innings out of the bullpen to earn her second victory of the day, and sixth on the year (6-1). Beck, the Lions' fourth pitcher of the contest, secured the final out to earn her team-leading second save of the year.
Jessica O'Neil (4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 2 K) started for Georgian Court, leaving the game with a no-decision.
Colleen Bentke (Sr.-Brenham, Texas) takes the loss for the 12-1 Patriots, permitting four runs (4 ER) on six hits and a pair of free passes (3 K) in 4.1 innings of work. She drops to 6-1 on the year with the setback.
Georgian Court now looks forward to Saturday when they take on #17 University of Indianapolis (9:00 a.m.) and Molloy College (11:30 a.m.) to close out the Lions' 12-game trip.
