Lakewood, N.J. - A
Tanner Lee goal just 35 seconds into overtime provided an abrupt end to a Tuesday men's lacrosse thriller as Georgian Court University outlasted the University of the District of Columbia, 10-9, snapping the Lions' two-game slide.
UDC claimed the first tally of the day whenÂ
Syrrus Nash (Sr. Syracuse, N.Y.) found the back of the net 1:34 into the game. Georgian Court immediately followed with three unanswered, and five of the game's next six tallies, to claim a 5-2 surplus with 13:21 to go before the break.
Alan Singleton (Sr.-Montreal, Quebec) and
Eric Boco (So.-Silver Spring, Md.) decreased its deficit by two with goals at 9:43 and 8:57 of the second period before the Lions connected on yet another unanswered trio to go ahead by a game-high four scores, 8-4, with 10:44 to go in the third.
The two squads exchanged a tally each to put the Lions ahead, 9-5, with 10:04 left before the Firebirds scorched the home team for four straight, capped by a
Edmund Taylor (Sr.-Maple Valley, Wash.) scoring effort with just 1:19 remaining to knot the game at 9-all.
GCU, playing its second extra-session effort of the season (Mar. 5 at Embry-Riddle University), opened the stanza with a face-off win by
Brendan Heggers.
Troy Longley proceeded to collect his game-high 10th ground ball and move the Lions' into UDC territory before Head Coach
Mickey Hover called a timeout to set the stage.
With play resuming at the 3:38 mark, the Lions advanced to net. Lee gathered a grounder behind the Firebirds' cage, bringing the ball around the right side before turning and flinging home the game-winner into the upper-left corner.
Lee finished the afternoon with three points (two goals, assist), matched by teammate
Brandon Lewis.
Michael Ventresca added two tallies of his own.
Austin Geissel improved to 4-6 between the Georgian Court pipes, collecting 14 saves off 42 total shots (23 SOG) by the 4-5 Firebirds.
Nikolas Lund-Murray (Sr.-New Westminster, British Columbia) garnered three saves over 60:35 in the UDC heartbreaker.
Georgian Court now prepares for Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action as the Lions host Wilmington University next Wednesday, April 10 (3:30 p.m.) in a rematch of the 2018 CACC Championship Tournament semifinals. GCU defeated the Wildcats that day (Apr. 27), 17-4.
