Lakewood, N.J. - Coming off a 10-point loss Wednesday at Wilmington, Georgian Court University bounced back in a big way as the Lions came home Saturday and knocked off visiting Caldwell University, 85-79, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball action.
The victory, Georgian Court's six of the year (6-7), establishes a new program record for wins in a single season. The previous high-water mark of five had been established on three separate occasions (2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18).
Trailing 12-7 early in the first half (13:08), the Lions roared with an a 11-6 response to go ahead by two (18-16) with 9:11 on the clock. With the Cougars (8-7, 4-3 CACC) back on top by a pair (26-24) just under five minutes later (4:14), GCU again flexed its muscle to outscore Caldwell by a 14-6 margin over the remainder of the half to take a 38-32 advantage into the locker room.
In an evenly-divided second stanza that provided both squads 47 points apiece, Georgian Court was successful in keeping Caldwell at arm's length over the final 20 minutes of action. After leading the Cougars by eight points on two separate occasions in the half, the visiting team twice sliced the deficit to a single point (and as late as the 4:00 mark), but were unable to overcome the Lions.
The win marks GCU's second-ever vs. Caldwell, the first coming back on Jan. 22, 2016 in the Wellness Center (72-64).
