Lakewood, N.J. - In a contest that witnessed 13 lead changes and five ties, it would be Caldwell University that would come out on top as the visiting Cougars bested Georgian Court University Saturday on the road, 56-52, to earn the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory.
With the score knotted at 17-17 after one quarter of action, Caldwell proceeded to outpace the Lions over the next ten minutes, 16-11, to secure a five-point cushion (33-28) heading into intermission.
Trailing by the same five-point margin (37-32) at the 8:29 mark of the third, GCU took off on a 9-0 run to grab a 41-37 surplus at 5:33. Not to be outdone, Caldwell (3-13, 3-4 CACC) responded by closing the session with an 11-2 pouncing to go back up by five (48-43) after 30:00 of play.
Down by six (52-46) with 4:11 left in regulation, consecutive three-pointers from
Tian Addison and
Safiyyah Lee tied the contest, 52-all, with just 2:15 remaining on the clock. The stalemate would hold until 0:54 when a
Paula Dits (So.-Alicante, Spain) jumper in the paint pushed the Cougars past GCU, 54-52, for what would be the game-winning shot.
A pair of
Tina Lebron (Sr.-Manalapan, N.J.) free throws with one tick remaining sealed the triumph for the visitors.
The Cougars shot just 29.9% from the field,but were gifted 26 points off 29 Georgian Court turnovers.
Alessia Smaldone (Gr.-Malnate, Italy) topped all players with her 15 points and six assists. Dits collected 13 points and eight boards in the win while Lebron poured in 10 points of her own.
Rebecca Morrison (Fr.-Ayrshire, Scotland) provided 12 boards and nine points in the effort.
Lee registered her team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 12 boards and 10 points off the Lions' bench. Addison and
Ivona Krakic matched their teammate with 10 points apiece in the setback.
Georgian Court (4-9, 2-4 CACC) now prepares to take to the road this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with a visit to divisional-rival, Holy Family University (9-5, 7-0 CACC).
