Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University experienced its fourth consecutive setback Tuesday evening as the Lions dropped a 66-58 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball divisional tilt in the Wellness Center.
GCU opened the game with a sizzling 12-0 stretch before the Lightning scorched the home team with a 14-3 spurt of its own to close the initial quarter trailing by just one (15-14). Goldey-Beacom (3-14, 3-6 CACC) carried its momentum into the second period, which the visitors opened with a 7-1 surge to take a 21-17 lead.
The Lightning took off from there, mounting another healthy run (9-3) to go ahead by double-digits (30-20) with 2:46 to go in the half. Up by seven after the break (32-25), GBC increased its surplus to a game-high 11 when a
Sarah Round (So.-Northampton, England) three-pointer made the score 40-29 with 5:55 left in the frame.
Georgian Court regained its energy from the opening minutes as the Lions rattled off a 14-2 pouncing to retake the lead with 16 ticks remaining in the third. The GCU advantage would again be short-lived as an
Alexis Harrison (So.-Millville, N.J.) layup (0:02) put GBC back ahead, 44-43, heading into the fourth-and-final frame.
The fourth quarter provided its share of thrills and anxious moments as the foes battled to four stalemates and a pair of lead changes over the first 5:59 of play. It was at that moment that
Amanda McGrogan (Sr.-Mount Laurel, N.J.) nailed a layup which kick-started an 11-5 stretch for the Lightning to close the contest.
The aforementioned McGrogan topped all players with her 23 points, including a stellar 15-for-16 effort from the charity stripe. Harrison contributed a double-double performance consisting of 19 points and 10 boards.
Safiyyah Lee paced the Lions' offense with her 18 points over 37 minutes of action.
Savawn Hughes followed with 11 points while
Leighanna Lister enjoyed a solid showing for GCU with her nine points, six rebounds, and a two steals off the bench.
The Lions (4-12, 2-7 CACC) sit idle until Sunday afternoon when they visit Dominican College (8-10, 6-3 CACC) at 3:00 p.m.
