Philadelphia, Pa. - Georgian Court University's five-game losing streak is officially history as the Lions snapped the slide with a 75-68 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) divisional road win at Chestnut Hill College Wednesday night in women's basketball action.
The victory represents the Lions first since January 8 when GCU triumphed at Wilmington University, 78-77.Â
With the score knotted at 5-5 2:47 into the initial quarter of action, Georgian Court launched a 20-6 run to take a game-high 14-point advantage with nine seconds remaining in the session. The Griffins (7-13, 6-5 CACC) countered in the second, outscoring its guest by a 16-7 margin to slice the deficit to just two points (32-30) heading into the break.
The third period provided continuous back-and-forth competition as the fans witnessed three stalemates and four lead changes over the ten-minute set. With the home team holding a slim 44-41 surplus at the 2:41 mark, GCU responded with an 8-0 jolt to sail into the final stanza ahead by five (49-44).
After a
Leighanna Lister layup increased the Georgian Court cushion to nine (65-56) at 3:27, the Griffins answered with one final push to overtake the Lions. Chestnut Hill climbed to within a basket (67-65) with 1:33 to go before GCU closed the door on its host with an 8-3 spurt to close the contest.
Four Lions registered double-digit scoring efforts on the evening, topped by
Savawn Hughes and her 17 points. The aforementioned Lister registered season-bests with her 16 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks in 21 minutes off the GCU bench.
Tian Addison drained 15 points (including a trio of three-pointers) while
Jada Atchison contributed 13 points and five helpers in her return to the Georgian Court lineup.
Hanna Thrainsdottir cleared the glass of a team-high 11 rebounds for the victors.

Cassie Sebold (Jr.-Willow Grove, Pa.) added 18 points while

GCU (5-13, 3-8 CACC) returns home for its next outing when the Lions host Holy Family University next Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 6:00 p.m. The Tigers (13-5, 11-0 CACC) defeated Georgian Court, 67-58, in Philadelphia back on Jan. 15.
