Lakewood, N.J. - On a frigid Valentine's Day Friday (21 degrees wind chill), Bloomsburg University and Georgian Court University opened the 2020 NCAA Division II women's lacrosse campaign. The visiting Huskies proved to be heartless as BU secured an 13-9 non-conference triumph over the Lions.
With Bloomsburg owning an early 3-1 lead at 23:41 of the first half, GCU rattled off three-straight tallies to go ahead, 4-3, with 14:05 left before the break. The Huskies (1-0) answered with their own trio of unanswered goals to slip back ahead, 6-4, at the 9:34 mark.
The two squads traded a score each to make it 7-5 guests before
Arianna Quinlan poured in her third (man-down) and fourth goals of the half at 3:52 and 2:41, respectively, to knot the game at 7-7 heading into intermission.
It would be all Bloomsburg in the second stanza as the Huskies ripped six unanswered efforts to start the frame, taking a commanding 13-7 advantage with 6:58 remaining in regulation. BU secured the victory despite being out-shot by the Lions, 26-25, and committing more turnovers (28-23) in the contest.
Anna Dempsey (Jr.-Pottstown, Pa.) played a stellar game for the victors, netting a team-high four goals to go along with six draw controls.
Kelsey Clauss (Fr.-Cherry Hill, N.J.) contributed two goals in her collegiate debut.
Grace Kelleher (RJr.-Rockville Centre, N.Y.) enjoyed a balanced attack of two goals and a pair of helpers while
Abby Bergman (Jr.-Collegeville, Pa.) slipped in two tallies and controlled five draw controls.
Quinlan shined for the GCU offense as the senior sent in five opening-day goals.
Madison Heck,
Heather Devaney, and
Angelina Palermo added a goal and an assist each for the Lions.
Sabrina Chandler scored her first of the year while pacing the team with six draw controls.
Angela DiPasquale (Sr.-Paramus, N.J.) earned the "W" in net for the Huskies with 14 total saves.
Lucy Tamke was the tough-luck loser for Georgian Court with five saves for the royal and gold.
GCU (0-1) returns to action Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. with a non-conference home game vs. another team from the PSAC, Shippensburg University.
