Lakewood, N.J.- A 6-0 deficit just 12:43 into Tuesday's non-conference home tilt vs. Shippensburg University proved to be too much to overcome as Georgian Court University dropped an eventual 15-6 decision to the Raiders in NCAA Division II women's lacrosse action.
The Lions' offense heated up at 14:59 of the first half as
Madison Heck's first score of the contest kicked off a stretch of four unanswered tallies, cutting the Raiders' surplus to 6-4 with 1:06 remaining before intermission.
Coming out of halftime with a 7-4 lead, Shippensburg (1-0) exploded for eight straight goals, capping a stretch of nine unanswered that commenced with 35 seconds remaining in the first.
Sabrina Chandler and Heck added two late-minute goals for GCU at 4:31 and 0:08, respectively, but it would not be nearly enough to avoid the setback for the Lions.
Three Raiders recorded hat tricks in the win, including
Alana Cardaci (Jr.-Eagleville, Pa.),
Gabby Savarino (So.-Hauppauge, N.Y.) and
Hannah Seifried (So.-Springfield, Pa.).
Kami Holt (Sr.-Bel Air, Md.) and
Hannah Raines (So.-Chambersburg, Pa.) each netted two tallies apiece for the visitors.
Heck's hat trick highlighted the Georgian Court offense.
Sabrina Chandler,
Angelina Palermo and
Shaine Sauter provided a goal each for the 0-2 Lions. Shippensburg out-shot its host, 32-26 (24-19 on frame).
With 12 saves over her 51:01,
Ally Weneta (Fr.-Roanoke, Va.) earned the goalkeeping victory in her first-ever collegiate game.
Lucy Tamke suffered the loss, collecting a pair of saves over 30:00 for the Lions.
Georgian Court takes to the road for the first time Saturday with a non-conference visit to #11 East Stroudsburg University at 1:00 p.m.
