Softball Still Seeks First Taste of Victory as Lions Suffer Saturday Sweep at Lynn

Boca Raton, Fla. - Georgian Court University softball still seeks its first victory of 2020 as the Lions suffered a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Lynn University on day two of the GCU's season-opening trek through South Florida.

The host-Fighting Knights blanked its guest by a 4-0 score in the opener before registering a 7-3 in the subsequent contest.

A pair of runs in the third frame, bookended by lone tallies in the first and sixth innings, provided Lynn the offense it needed as the Fighting Knights coasted to the shutout win. 2B Shayle Arenson (Sr.-Glenview, Ill,) contributed two ribbies for the victors with a sacrifice fly in her first plate appearance and a run-inducing single two stanzas later.

Kayla Sheffield (Sr.-Auburndale, Fla.) went the distance in the circle for the Fighting Knights, yielding five hits and four free passes (0 K) en route to a 2-0 mark on the young season. Mikayla Gilgert (0-2) took the ball for the Lions, permitting four runs (3 ER) on eight hits and a walk (2 K) over 5.1 innings in the GCU setback.

Caitlyn Hughes went a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and a walk atop the Lions' lineup in game one.

In the nightcap, Lynn (5-3) lit up the scoreboard in each of the first four frames, including a trio of tallies in the first and a two-spot in the fourth. Trailing 7-1 in the top of the seventh, Malaya Black launched the Lions' first long ball of the year (a two-run shot to left) to slice the deficit to four runs.

Allyson Jameston (Jr.-Valrico, Fla.) fired a complete-game to improve to 3-0 for the Fighting Knights, allowing three runs (2 ER) on a pair of knocks and walks (4 K) over her seven full. Samantha Fohrman, making her first start (second appearance) for the royal and gold, suffered the loss (0-1) for the Lions (3.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 ER, BB, K).

GCU (0-4) closes out its road trip Sunday with another non-conference twin-bill, this time in Miami Shores, Fla. vs. Barry University at 11:00 a.m.
