Miami Shores, Fla. - Trailing 2-1 after six innings of play, Georgian Court University pushed across four runs in the top of the seventh as the Lions held off host-Barry University, 5-2, to secure the squad its first win of the year in game one of a Sunday twin-bill vs. the Buccaneers.
Barry countered in the nightcap, sending the Lions packing, 13-3, after just five innings in a contest plagued by six fielding miscues from the GCU defense.
In the opener, each club plated its initial tallies on run-inducing ground outs to shortstop. Barry took a 1-0 lead in the first frame before the Lions knotted the score in the fifth. The Bucs snapped the tie in the home half of the inning, courtesy of a fielder's choice from SS
Kayla Posten (Fr.-Cherry Hill, N.J.).
Looking to snap its season-opening four-game slide, GCU's offense came alive for its final at-bat as the visitors secured their four runs on four hits and three costly Barry blunders to ice the Buccaneers. 3B
Lindsey Fischbach (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and 2B
Samantha Salomon (1-for-4) provided the big blows for the Lions with ribbie doubles while CF
Caitlin Hughes (3-for-4, 2 R) brought around the team's first run of the comeback earlier in the inning with a single.
Samantha Fohrman (1-1), permitting only the two runs (1 ER) on seven hits and four free passes (7 K), went the distance to earn the freshman her first collegiate victory,Â
Sarah Johnson (Fr.-Newport News, Va.) suffered her first defeat after starting the year at 4-0 (6.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 3 WP).
Two runs in the first, three more in the second, and a crooked eight-spot in the fifth for Barry crippled the Lions as the Buccaneers (6-4) coasted to the 10-run triumph. Fischbach, who finished the day a combined 5-for-7 at the plate for the Lions, knocked in her third run of the afternoon with a third-inning single.Â
Mikayla Gilgert slips to 0-3 for the Lions as the Georgian Court ace allowed five runs (1 ER) on six hits (1 K) over 1.2 innings pitched.
Jordanna Hartley (Fr.-Newmarket, Ontario) collected her first win (1-3) for the Bucs (5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, BB, 2 K).
The Lions (1-5) now remain idle until Saturday, February 29 when Georgian Court takes on Notre Dame College (2:45 p.m.) and Tiffin University (4:45 p.m.) in Winter Haven, Fla. for the 2020 PFX Spring Games.
