Winter Haven, Fla. - The Georgian Court University softball squad snapped its five-game losing streak in grand fashion as the Lions knocked off the #12 team in the nation, Saint Anselm College, in a 3-2 upset of the Hawks Wednesday afternoon at the 2020 Spring Games.
Coming off a disappointing 4-2 setback to Cedarville University (4-15) earlier in the day, the Lions pounced first with a second-inning tally in the nightcap vs. Saint Anslem (13-3). The Hawks countered in the top of the third with two runs of their own, courtesy of a pair of bases-loaded free passes.
Trailing by one, Georgian Court knotted the score at 2-2 in the home half of the fifth when a red-hot
Lindsey Fischbach laced a single to right field, bringing home
Malia Black with the tying run. GCU proceeded to create havoc on the base paths in the following frame to induce the Lions' third-and-final run. A double steal by
Paige Eckert and
Samantha Salomon (2-for-2, 2 R, BB) resulted in a throwing error by the Saint Anselm catcher, permitting Salomon to trot home for what would be the game-winner.
Minus the third-inning jam that allowed the Hawks' two runs,
Mikayla Gilgert (2-5) was lights out for the Lions in the circle as the sophomore yielded just three hits in the complete-game effort (4 BB, 4 K).
McKenna Smith (So.-Old Town, Maine) took the loss for Saint Anselm in her complete-game effort (6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 10 K).
GCU (4-10) takes Thursday off before returning to action Friday with contests vs. the University of Bridgeport (10:00 a.m.) and Grand Valley State University (12:15 p.m.).
