Ortiz-Traylor Drains 23 Points in Men's Basketball Opener vs. Nyack

Lakewood, N.J. - 23 points from Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor highlighted an otherwise sluggish offensive performance for Georgian Court University as the Lions, making their 2021 home debut, dropped a 61-57 decision to Nyack College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball action.

The Warriors (1-1, 1-1 CACC) kicked off the afternoon by netting the contest's first 10 points and building a first-half cushion of 15 points (27-12) at the 5:14 mark, courtesy of a Marquis Copeland (Jr.-Washington, D.C.) three-point play. Georgian Court was able to chip five points off its deficit over the final minutes (highlighted by a deep three-pointer from Ahmir Harris at the buzzer), to make the score 34-24 Nyack heading into intermission.

Trailing 36-26 just 1:08 into the second stanza, the Lions (0-2, 0-2 CACC) developed some offensive mojo by pouncing for an 18-7 run and taking their first (and only) lead of the day (44-43) with 11:03 left. GCU was able to tie the game on three more occasions with the final stalemate coming at 2:38 when an Ortiz-Traylor three-ball evened the ledger at 57-57.

Those points would be the final tallies of the day for the home squad as the Warriors closed out the "W" with a modest 4-0 spurt.

Neither team shot especially well from the floor (GCU-29.9%, Nyack-38.6%). The Warriors were more efficient at the charity stripe (81.3%) than its host (57.1%). The victors did, however, turn the ball over just under three times more than the Lions (Nyack-17, GCU-6).

The aforementioned Ortiz-Traylor topped GCU with his 23 points over 35 minutes, which included five three-pointers, in the effort. Kim Speller and Shane Williams each added nine points apiece.

Jayden Dawson (Jr.-Teaneck, N.J.) and Joel Bailey (Jr.-Saint Catherine, Jamaica) paced Nyack with 17 points each while Copeland dominated the glass with 18 boards.

Georgian Court takes to the road for its next outing as the Lions visit Concordia College in Bronxville, N.Y. next Saturday at noon.
