Jersey City, N.J. - Georgian Court University women's basketball is 2-0 to start a season for the first time in 20 years as the Lions hit the road and outlasted Nyack College, 69-62, Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action. The contest was played on the Warriors' "home court" at New Jersey City University.
GCU (2-0 CACC) last opened a campaign perfect after two outings with victories over The College of Mount Saint Vincent (89-56) and Drew University (65-62) back on November 17-18, 2001.
After an initial quarter that concluded with the Warriors (0-2, 0-2 CACC) up by a deuce at 20-18, the Lions answered by taking a low-scoring second period, 12-8, and, more importantly, the lead (30-28) heading into the break.Â
Georgian Court increased its advantage to eight when a
Hanna Thrainsdottir jumper made the score 38-30 Lions with 7:04 left in the third. Nyack proceeded to notch a 16-6 run and take a two-point lead at 3:38, courtesy of a three-pointer from
Angelina Dimarsico (Fr.-Stony Brook, N.Y.).
The Lions, up 52-49 at 9:11 in the fourth quarter, squandered its slim three-point surplus as the home team enjoyed a six-point swing to go ahead 55-52 with 5:20 to go. GCU got back on track on the offensive end as the road team took the lead away from Nyack good when a
Tian Addison lay-up made the score 56-55 with 3:18 on the clock.
GCU sealed the key conference "W" by ending the game on a healthy 13-7 spurt.
Anyssa Fields starts her collegiate career with two-straight double-doubles as the freshman topped GCU with 19 points and 15 boards, to along with three steals and a pair of blocks.
Jariah Patterson also has enjoyed a solid start, registering her second consecutive contest with a double-digit scoring effort (11 points).
Andejla Kremenovic poured in 10 points while Thrainsdottir, after an opening night double-double, responded with nine points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Amani Levitan (Fr.-Bloomfield, Conn.) paced Nyack with 18 points and four steals.
Sarah Wilson (Jr.-New Hope, Pa.) contributed 13 points and six helpers while
Jasmine Cruse dropped in 10 points and secured a team-high seven rebounds.
Georgian Court remains on the road for its next outing as the Lions visit Felician University Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
