Lakewood, N.J. - Trailing by three heading into the fourth, Georgian Court University closed out Saturday's contest with a 20-10 showing over the final 10:00 to outlast visiting Bloomfield College, 66-59, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball action.
The victory keeps the Lions' record unblemished at a perfect 7-0 (7-0 CACC). The Bears dip below the .500 mark at 2-3 (2-3 CACC).
GCU appeared to be in cruise control from the start as the home team completed the initial quarter with a cozy 18-8 advantage. The Bloomfield offense blossomed in the subsequent session, outscoring its host by a 23-12 margin to slide into intermission with a one-point edging (31-30) of the Lions.
In a third period that experienced three lead changes and a trio of stalemates, the Bears pounced for their largest lead of the day with 1:01 left when a
DaShanique Ruffin (R-So., Patterson, N.J.) jumper put the road team on top, 49-43.
The fourth period became the
Jariah Patterson Show as the GCU freshman, playing against her hometown team, drained 10 of her 12 points in the final frame, including both of her three-pointers on the day, to lead the Lions to the win column. Down 49-46 entering the last 10:00, Georgian Court went off on a 16-4 run to create a commanding nine-point surplus (62-53) with 3:30 left in regulation.
Savawn Hughes, who has averaged 19.0 points over her last two outings, topped the victors with 18 in Saturday's win, going 7-for-12 from the floor.
Anyssa Fields, the reigning CACC Player of the Week, connected for 13 points in 35 minutes,
Tian Addison collected a line consisting of 10 points, six assists, four swipes, and a pair of blocks.
Hanna Thrainsdottir proved to be a force on the defensive end with a game-high five denials to go along with five total boards.
The aforementioned Ruffin carried the Bloomfield offensive with a her game-leading 26 points and nine rebounds over 26 minutes of action.
Morenike Akinrefon (Jr.-New Brunswick, N.J.) eclipsed double-digits with 10 points in 18 minutes off the Bears' bench.
