Bronxville, N.Y. - Trailing by 16 with 17:28 left in regulation, Georgian Court University exploded for a 36-19 surge the rest of the way to hold off host-Concordia College, 59-58, Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball action.
The victory fills the win column for the Lions (1-2, 1-2 CACC), and represents Georgian Court's first-ever triumph in Bronxville. The Clippers remain winless (0-3, 0-3 CACC) on the young season.
"This win was a total team win," said head coach
Terrence Stewart. "Our second unit came in the second half and changed the direction of the game. They played with more energy, demonstrated better communication on defense, and played more connected on offense."
In a closely-contested first half, a pair of free throws from
Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor put the Lions to within a basket (21-19) at the 5:01 mark. With neither team owning a lead larger than five up to this point, the Clippers set sail on a 10-2 run to close the initial frame.
Concordia continued its momentum to start the second, advancing its surplus to a game-high 16 as a
Dan Porcic (So.-Putnam, Conn.) jumper at 17:28 made the score 39-23 Clips. GCU proceeded to turn up the heat on its host, firing off a 22-3 surge to tie the affair at 42-42 (12:09).
After the two teams traded three-pointers to create a 45-45 stalemate at the 11:35 mark, the royal-and-gold launched a 10-3 march (capped by a
Shane Williams three-ball) to create a game-high, seven-point advantage of 55-48 (5:13 to go). Hanging on by five with 1:10 left, the Clippers cut the deficit to one (59-58) in just 26 seconds.Â
A crucial Concordia turnover with 0:12 to go proved to be quite costly as the Lions proceeded to run out the clock and seal the win.
"I'm proud of our team for fighting back and securing the win," added Stewart. "It wasn't pretty, but we'll take it."
Coming off a 23-point effort last Saturday vs. Nyack, Ortiz-Traylor came back to record a double-double performance consisting of 14 points and 15 rebounds to pace the victors.
Jelani Jackson, Williams, and
Clint Wright, Jr. followed with eight points apiece.
Hartnel Haye (R-Fr.-Camden, N.J.) picked up a double-double of his own in the setback with 11 points and 16 boards. Porcic and
Xavier Joyner (Fr.-Beltsville, Md.) popped in 13 points each for the Clippers.
The Lions return to the home hardwood this Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. CACCÂ showdown vs. Caldwell University.
