Lyndhurst, N.J. - Georgian Court University brought the lumber north to Felician University Monday as the Lions launched four home runs and smacked 12 overall extra-base hits in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball sweep of the Golden Falcons.
Taking the diamond for the first time in almost two weeks, GCU did not skip a beat as the road team came out with a 7-5 triumph in the opener. A three-spot in the third inning and two more in the fourth, book-ended by a single tally in both the first and seventh frames, accounted for the Lions' scoring. Six extra-base knocks, including dingers from
Taylor Barraza (2-for-3, 3 RBI),
Elisa Lopez (2-for-3), and
Alyssa Herrera (2-for-3, 2B) highlighted the box score.
Mikayla Gilgert pitched four full (4.0 IP) to earn her first win of the season, permitting three runs (3 ER) on five hits and two walks (5 K) in the effort.
Jennifer Tellefsen, pitching in her hometown, registered the save by going the final three frames of the game one victory (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 BB).
A lead-off home run by
Caitlyn Hughes (2-for-5) set the tone as GCU smacked six more extra-base hits (12 hits overall) in a 5-4, game-two edging of the Golden Falcons (1-9, 1-3 CACC) .
Kiara Meikle, after collecting a pair of ribbies in the opener, closed the afternoon with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish, which included the freshman's second triple of the season. Herrera made her big day even more special going 2-for-4 with a double in game two.
In a little role reversal, it would be Gilgert that would close out a contest started by Tellefsen (ND, 2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K) as the Lions' ace fired 4.1 innings of scoreless softball (2 H, 3 BB, 2 K) to register the junior her second "W" of the day.
Georgian Court (3-1, 2-0 CACC), winners of three straight, stays on the road for its next outing with a non-conference doubleheader at Pace University Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
