Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University starting pitching continues to dominate CACC foes as the pairing of
Samantha Fohrman and
Mikayla Gilgert coasted to another conference sweep Saturday, sinking the Clippers by scores of 8-2 and 4-0.
A
Taylor Barraza RBI single, followed by a two-run homer to left by
Jayda Jones, provided the Lions an immediate 3-0 lead in inning one of the opener. Trailing 4-0 after four full, the Clippers (4-4, 4-4 CACC) scratched across tallies in both the fifth and sixth to slice its deficit in half. The home team proceeded to halt all Concordia comeback efforts as GCU added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by
Carleigh Luzzo's second home run of the year (solo) and a two-run single off the bat of
Alyssa Herrera.
Fohrman moves to 6-1 on the season permitting only the lone run on two hits (7 K, 4 BB) over 5.0 innings pitched. Gilgert shut down Concordia with 1.1 innings of perfect relief (3 K) to register the junior her first save of the season.
The aforementioned Jones finished the contest 3-for-4 (2B) with a trifecta of ribbies. Barraza (2-for-4) and Herrera (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B) also posted multi-hit efforts.
It was all Gilgert in the nightcap as the Queen Creek, Ariz. native authored her third-straight complete-game shutout. The Georgian Court ace (8-1) limited the Clippers to just two hits (BB) en route to the 4-0 win. The right-hander struck out 10 batters in the triumph.
GCU plated the first run of the game in the top of the second as 1B
Kaitlyn Stufft powered a long ball over the left-field fence for her first collegiate home run. Barraza, Jones, and
Elisa Lopez contributed run-inducing knocks of their own in the sixth to seal the Lions' win.
Georgian Court, now 14-2 (8-0 CACC) on the year, will return to action Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. (D.H.) with a visit to CACC nemesis, Caldwell University. The Cougars currently own a 6-5-1 (6-5 CACC) record on the season.
