Caldwell, N.J. - Georgian Court University continues to roll through conference competition as the Lions completed a doubleheader sweep of Caldwell University Tuesday on the road, keeping the royal-and-blue unblemished in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.
Winners of five straight, the Lions sit atop the CACC standings with a 10-0 conference record (16-2 overall). The Cougars, a perennial powerhouse, sport an atypical 6-7-1 (6-7 CACC) ledger.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the sixth inning, the Georgian Court bats awoke with a six spot in the aforementioned frame, followed by three more tallies in the seventh, to win game one handily, 9-1.The victors smacked six hits in the sixth, which included a two-run single off the bat of
Adriana Mungo (2-for-3, 2 R), to go along with ribbie knocks from
Taylor Barraza (2B) and
Carleigh Luzzo.
An RBI single from
Alyssa Herrera and a two-run homer by
Jayda Jones provided the insurance digits in the seventh. For Jones, the long ball marks the team-leading fourth of the season for the powerhouse freshman.
Samantha Fohrman earned the win in the circle for the Lions as the sophomore yielded five hits and a lone free pass ( 9 K) in the complete-game performance.
Owning an 8-3 lead after five-and-a-half frames, GCU looked well on its way to a nightcap triumph. The Cougars had other thoughts as they battered Fohrman, who came in to relieve starting pitcher,
Mikayla Gilgert, in the bottom of the sixth. Caldwell brought around five runs in the stanza to tie the affair at 8-all and force extra innings.
After Mungo smoked a two-out single and
Taylor Barraza walked with two outs in the eighth, Jones provided more late-inning magic for the Lions as the freshman clubbed a grounds-rule double to bring in Mungo from second base with the game-winner.Â
Gilgert, who worked the first six innings for the Lions, returned to the circle to shut down the Cougars in the eighth-and-final frame and register the rare save for a starting pitcher (7.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K). The save marks the second since Saturday (game one vs. Concordia) for the junior hurler.
Fohrman joins her rotation mate with a statistical rarity as the sophomore wins both games of the double-dip, improving to 8-1 despite an uncharacteristic subpar outing for the fireballer (1.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB).
Georgian Court returns home to host Bloomfield College Saturday at 2pm (D.H.) in yet another CACC battle.
