Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University continues to roll as the Lions registered its third-consecutive softball sweep Saturday, blanking Bloomfield College by scores of 5-0 and 8-0 Saturday in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action.
GCU improves its overall record to 18-2 and remains perfect in conference play (10-0) as the royal and blue extends its winning streak to seven-straight. The Bears fall to 3-8-1 with the double setbacks.
An
Alyssa Herrera RBI triple, followed byÂ
Jayda Jones' fifth home run since April 6Â (two-run shot), provided a 3-0 lead right out of the gate in Saturday's opener.
Adriana Mungo contributed a fifth-inning ribbie double to account for the Lions' final tally of the game one triumph.
Samantha Fohrman took care of the rest as the Lions' hurler had her way with the Bloomfield batters, scattering four hits (0 BB) and striking out 10 in the complete-game shutout. The sophomore, now 9-1, has registered a double-digit strikeout performance four times in eight starts this season.
Reigning Wilson/NFCA Division II Pitcher of the Week,
Mikayla Gilgert, continues to carve up opposing lineups as the Georgian Court ace collected her fourth-consecutive complete game shutout with a game two masterpiece. The native of Apache Junction, Ariz. yielded just two hits (BB) and struck out six in the six-inning performance.
A Herrera three-run homer in the first inning set the tone for the game as GCU unloaded for 12 hits in the rout. The freshman slugger, now batting an astounding .492 on the year, went 5-for-8 on the day with a 2B, 3B, HR, and four RBI in the twin-bill.
Taylor Barraza collected her team-best 23rd RBI of the year with a second-inning single. Mungo completed a solid showing, going 2-for-3 with a run-inducing base-on-balls (2nd-inning) and a walk-off two-bagger in the sixth.
The Lions immediately return to action Sunday with a non-conference home doubleheader vs. Kutztown University. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
