Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University, playing its third doubleheader of the week, welcomed regional powerhouse Kutztown University to campus Sunday afternoon as the Lions tarnished the Golden Bears, 10-2 (6 inn.) in the opener of an eventual softball split.
GCU owned KU in the game one, plating 10 runs on 12 hits and three Golden Bear miscues. Five Lions recorded two or more hits in the rout, including SS
Alyssa Rue who went 2-for-3 with a long homer to left in the sixth.
Jayda Jones blasted her team-leading fifth dinger of the year ( a two-run shot) in the fourth.
Caitlin Hughes (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B),
Taylor Barraza (2-for-3, 2 RBI), and
Malaya Black (2-for-2, 2 R) all enjoyed two-hit efforts.
Adriana Mungo (2-for-4, 2 RBI), for the second consecutive game, smashed the walk-off hit as the freshman's single to the right-center gap plated Black with the mercy rule-inducing tally.
Samantha Fohrman moves to a team-best 10-1 on the year as the sophomore yielded two runs (1 ER) on five hits and a pair of walks in her six innings of work.
Sarah Harvey (7-5) suffered the loss for Kutztown (5.2 IP, 12 H, 10 R, 9 ER, BB, K).
The aforementioned Harvey (So.-Swanton, Vt.) came back to haunt the home team in the nightcap as the 5'10" slugger crunched a solo home run in the top of the seventh, snapping a six-all stalemate as the Golden Bears (24-10) went on to salvage a 7-6 win.
Kutztown brought its offensive immediately at the start of the second contest, plating four runs in the first on a two-run single from
Jenna Lipowski (Sr.-Nanticoke, Pa.) and a two-run long ball off the bat of
Alyssa Donato (Sr.-Cedarville, N.J.). The Lions scraped across three runs over the next two frames, cutting the deficit to 4-3 after two full.
With the visitors holding a 6-4 advantage after five-and-a-half, GCU proceeded to knot the score in the bottom of the sixth. Rue's second homer of the game (a big fly to right-center) made the score 6-5 before a Hughes sacrifice fly to left tied the affair.
Mikayla Gilgert received a no-decision in in the start after permitting six runs (4 ER) on eight hits and two walks (4K) over 5.0 IP. Rue, who went 3-for-4 with three runs in the contest, finishes the day going 5-for-7 with five runs scores and a pair of ribbies.
The Lions (19-3) next take the field on Tuesday with a visit to CACC rival, Wilmington University. First pitch of the double-dip is slated for 2:30 p.m.
