Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University and Dominican College, sitting first and second place, respectively, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings, faced off in Saturday softball action as the foes split a pair of shutouts to close out the second-to-last week of the regular season.
Samantha Fohrman spun a nifty complete-game one-hitter, and
Jayda Jones jacked her team-leading seventh homer of the season, as the Lions coasted to an 8-0, five-inning rout of the Chargers in game one. The win marked GCU's sixth mercy-rule triumph over its previous eight games to that point.
The Lions plated runs in all but the third inning of the opener, highlighted by Jones' 2-for-3, four-RBI performance. The freshman ripped a two-run single in the first, followed by a long two-run shot in the fourth.
Adriana Mungo (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI) collected her third "walk-off" knock of the last two weeks as the first-year Lion brought the contest to an abrupt end with a game-winning single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth.
Malaya Black recorded a 3-for-3 ledger with a double, triple, and two runs scored.
Alyssa Herrera went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI,
Fohrman (12-1), was masterful in the circle yet again for the Lions as the sophomore sat down the first 12 batters she faced before permitting a lead-off single to start the fifth. The CACC's current triple-crown leader (ERA, wins, strikeouts) struck out eight and hit a batter (0 BB) in the near-perfect performance.
A
Kristin Miscia (So.-Basking Ridge, N.J.) solo home run with two outs in the sixth snapped a scoreless stalemate and provided Dominican the only run it would need to hold off the mighty Lions and salvage the split.Â
The hit was one of only two allowed by Georgian Court starter
Mikayla Gilgert (10-2) as the GCU ace was otherwise masterful in the tough-luck defeat. The junior (10-2) struck six (BB) in the stellar showing.Â
Journey Limardo (Fr.-Anaheim, Calif.) painted a pitching masterpiece of her own as the Dominican hurler kept the Lions off-balance the entire game, scattering six hits ( 0 BB) in the complete-game victory. GCU's
Caitlin Hughes seemed the be the only Lion to figure out the newcomer as the senior smacked a pair of singles in the setback.
The loss marks the first such result for Georgian Court in conference action (22-4, 15-1 CACC). Dominican closes the day at 17-11 (16-4 CACC).
