18 Runs, 23 Hits Provide Lions Pair of Mercy-Rule Wins Over Visiting Holy Family University

Lakewood, N.J. - Two days after enduring a 1-0 shutout vs. Dominican College, Georgian Court University rebounded in a big way as the Lions unloaded for 18 runs on 23 hits in a pair of five-inning defeats of Holy Family University Monday in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action.

GCU fired off an 8-0 shutout in the opener of the twin-bill before closing out the day with a 10-2 rout in the nightcap. The victories, which bump the record of the first-place Lions to 24-4 (17-1 CACC), make it seven mercy-rule wins over the program's last 10 outings.

Mikayla Gilgert (11-2) had her way with the Tigers' lineup, permitting a lone hit and walk, while striking out 10 in the complete-game shutout. The blanking was the fifth of the season for junior and fourth performance with 10 or more strikeouts.

Georgian Court scored in each of its four offensive frames, including three tallies in both the first and fourth innings. Seven of the Lions' 11 knocks went for extra bases. Jayda Jones enjoyed a perfect 3-for-3 effort with a double, triple, and two RBI. Alyssa Herrera (2-for-3, double) drove in two and scored a pair. Adriana Mungo (2-for-3, 2B, 2 R, RBI) and Cailtin Hughes (1-for-2, 3B, R, 2 RBI) also sported solid showings at the dish.

In game two, Jennifer Tellefsen (1-1) collected her first pitching victory since the 2019 campaign as the senior spun three one-hit frames (four strikeouts) to earn the decision.

The Lions' rapped 12 more hits in the rout, including a perfect 4-for-4 showing from Herrera (2B, 3 RBI, 2 R). Hughes also enjoyed a fulfilling second contest as the senior went 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI. Malaya Black (2-for-3) crunched a three-run homer to dead center the bottom of the third, the senior's second of the season.

The royal and gold now prepares to visit Jefferson this Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in another CACC clash.
