Philadelphia, Pa. - Freshman slugger,
Jayda Jones, collected six runs batted in, and clubbed her team-leading eighth home run, as the newcomer led the Lions to yet another Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball sweep, this time vs. Jefferson in Wednesday action.
Georgian Court University rolled the Rams with wins of 6-2 and 8-0 (5 inn.) to improve to 26-4 on the season (19-1 CACC) while Jefferson drops to 14-8 (14-8 CACC). The mercy-rule triumph gives GCU nine such victories this season.
Trailing by a 2-0 score after one full frame in the opener, the twin-sister tandem of
Malaya and
Malia Black responded with ribbie singles in the top of the second to put the road team up by one at 3-2. GCU never looked back as a
Taylor Barraza RBI (3rd inn.), a run-inducing bunt single from
Cailtin Hughes (4th inn.) and a Jones solo jolt to left-center in the seventh closed the door on the Rams.
Samantha Fohrman, the reigning CACC Pitcher of the Week, was her usual dominating self in the circle as the sophomore struck out 11 en route to her 13th win of the season (13-1). The Cottage Grove, Minn. native scattered six hits (2 R, 1ER) and walked a pair in her 10th complete-game performance of the season.
Not to be outdone in the nightcap,
Mikayla Gilgert authored a complete-game one-hitter as the junior hurler moves to 12-2 on the year with the blanking. The shutout marks the sixth such showing for the native of Apache Junction, Ariz., who struck out six and walked none in the win.
The aforementioned Jones, despite going only 1-for-1 in the rout, still managed to pocket five RBI as the Corona, Calif. native settled for sacrifice flies in both the first and third innings, before rapping a three-run double to left in the fourth. Barraza blasted her second dinger of the season (solo) in the third.
Alyssa Herrera added a run-scoring two-bagger in the same frame.
GCU returns to the road Friday with a trip north to Post University in Waterbury, Conn. for another CACC twin-bill. First pitch is slated for noon.
