Waterbury, Conn. -
Mikayla Gilgert recorded a pair of victories, and rookie
Jayda Jones launched her conference-leading ninth home run, as first-place Georgian Court secured yet another Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball sweep, this time at Post University.
The Lions (28-4, 21-1 CACC) edged the Eagles in the opener, 3-2, before the road team recorded a 10-2, six-inning win in the nightcap, the team's 11th mercy-rule triumph of the season.
Trailing 1-0 in game one, Jones (3-for-3) jolted a two-run shot in the top of the fourth to provide GCU a one-run cushion. Post countered in the home half of the frame as
Kasey Jusino (So.-Bordentown, N.J.) smacked a game-tying single to right. The 2-2 stalemate would hold until the sixth when designated player,
Kiara Miekle, ripped the game-winning knock to center, plating Jones (single) from third.
Samantha Fohrman started the contest for the Lions, going 2.2 innings (3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) in the no-decision. Gilgert took it from there as the Apache Junction, Ariz. native fired 4.1 frames of one-hit ball (1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), as the junior moved to 13-2 with the win.
Four runs in both the third and sixth innings, and two more in the fifth, accounted for all of the Lions' scoring in game two as GCU coasted past Post to complete the sweep.
Taylor Barraza pounded out five RBI in the rout with the sophomore's perfect 3-for-3 (sac fly) plate performance.
Adriana Mungo went 2-for-4 while plating a pair of runs.
Alyssa Herrera laced a double and scored runs of her own.
Gilgert got the start in game two, going another 4.1 innings (5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K) to secure her CACC-leading 14th victory of the season.
GCU returns home to host Nyack College Saturday at noon in another conference double-dip.
