Lakewood, N.J.- Georgian Court University registered its 12th and 13th mercy-rule victories of the season Saturday as the Lions fired off five-inning wins of 14-5 and 9-0 over visiting Nyack College, improving to an astounding 23-1 mark vs. conference foes in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action.
Game one commenced inauspiciously for the Lions as
Erin O'Brien's (Sr.-Bridgetown, N.J.) three-run long ball in the first frame provided the Warriors an immediate 3-0 cushion. The home team responded with two tallies in the bottom of the inning before following with six more in the second, highlighted by a solo homer from
Alyssa Rue (2-for-3) (4th of season) and a three-run shot off the bat of
Elisa Lopez (2-for-3) (6th of year).Â
Up 8-3, GCU plated four more runs (all unearned) in the fourth to go up by nine. The Warriors, refusing to go down without a fight, mustered two tallies in the top of the fifth to temporarily avoid an early exit. However, the inevitable would nix Nyack as
Caitlin Hughes (3-for-4, 4 R, 2 RBI)Â proceeded to smoke a two-run laser (2nd of season) over the right-field wall to walk off the visiting squad.
Adriana Mungo (2-for-2, 2 RBI)
Taylor Barraza (2-for-2, R, RBI) also posted multi-hit efforts in the win.
Samantha Fohrman registered her second-straight no-decision as the Lions' starter went only 2.0 innings in the contest (3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 2 K).
Jennifer Tellefsen (2-1) earned the win out of the GCU bullpen (2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB).
Two runs in the third inning of the nightcap (and seven more in the fourth) provided all the insurance Georgian Court would need as the first-place Lions pounded out 13 hits en route to their 30th win of the season (30-4).Â
Six different players recorded RBI's in the win victory for GCU while four Lions enjoyed multi-hit showings (Barraza, Herrera, Lopez, Mungo).Â
Mikayla Gilgert (4.0 IP) and
Sarah Clancy combined for the shutout with Gilgert earning her CACC-leading 15th victory (15-2) in the process (3 H, 2 BB, 7 K).
Georgian Court concludes its CACC regular-season slate Sunday with a noontime visit to Goldey-Beacom College.
