Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University and Molloy College, in a battle of the Lions, traded shutout efforts Friday as the pair of non-conference foes settled for a double-header split in NCAA Division II softball action.
GAME ONE
Molloy's
Courtney Greene (East Islip, N.Y.) fired a three-hit, complete game shutout (0 BB, 6 K) in the opener, snapping Georgian Court's 11-game winning streak with the 1-0 victory. Batting cleanup in the Molloy lineup, the senior took it upon herself to also provide the offense as Greene helped her own cause by launching a long solo home run to right-center in the fourth inning.
Georgian Court's best chance of scoring came in the bottom half of the aforementioned frame when 3B
Alyssa Herrera (2-for-3) led off by lacing her second triple of the year to right-center. 1B
Taylor Barraza proceeded to sizzle a line drive to left, which was caught on a dive byÂ
Grace Rende (So.-South Portland, Me.). Herrera sprinted home, but was subsequently called out for allegedly leaving the base early, essentially extinguishing the GCU momentum.
Samantha Fohrman (5-1), aside from one bad pitch in the fourth, was absolutely dominant in the effort as the sophomore scattered five hits and walked two (11 K) in the compete-game performance. Greene goes to 7-2 on the year with the victory.
GAME TWO
A pair of lone tallies in the first and third inning, and three-spot in the sixth, provided the home team ample cushion as the Lions responded with a blanking of its own for the 5-0 win. Barraza, who now leads GCU with 18 RBI over 14 outings, brought in the first two scores of the game with a ribbie double in the first, followed by a run-inducing single in the third.
Jade Warner (sac fly) and
Malaya Black (fielder's choice) brought in two of the Lions' three runs in the sixth while
Kaitlyn Stufft was responsible for the final insurance tally with a sizzling RBI double down the left field line.Â
Mikayla Gilgert (7-1) authored her second complete-game shutout victory in 24 hours (9-0 at Chestnut Hill) as the junior hurler scattered six hits (0 BB) and struck out 11 in the seven-inning masterpiece.
Amanda King (Jr.-Guilford, Conn.) suffered the loss for Molloy (5.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K).
GCU (12-2) looks to begin a new winning streak Saturday afternoon when the Lions host Concordia College at 12:00 p.m. in a CACC doubleheader. Follow the action LIVE on the
