Hillburn, N.Y. - Add another chapter to the storybook career of Georgian Court University's
Austin Geissel, as he became the first player in the history of NCAA Division II men's lacrosse to reach the 1,000-save plateau Saturday night in the squad's regular-season finale at Dominican College.
The Pompton Plains, N.J. native, the most decorated men's lacrosse player to ever sport the royal-and-gold, recorded 11 saves in the eventual 15-14 setback to the Chargers. Coming into the night needing 10 saves to reach the milestone, Geissel ends the evening with 1,001 career denials ... tops in the NCAA Division II annals.
With the contest tied 9-9 at intermission, the Lions inched to an 11-10 lead on a
Tanner Lee tally with 8:56 to go in the third. The Chargers proceeded to rattle off five unanswered goals to take a 15-11 advantage at the 9:40 mark of the fourth.
Looking to mount a furious comeback, GCU poured in three straight to climb to within one with 3:03 left on the clock, but that would be as close as the Lions would get.
Seven different players would score goals for Georgian Court, led by Lee (2 goals, 2 assists) and
Daniel Burnham (3 goals, assist) with four points apiece.
Tallen Smith returned to the lineup and recorded a hat trick in the defeat.
Dylan Pool posted two goals and a helper while
P.J. Saracino added two tallies of his own.
Despite the outcome, the Lions (7-4, 3-3 CACC) have locked up the #3 seed in next week's CACC Championship Tournament. The two-time defending CACC champions will host #6 Post University Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals round. GCU defeated the Eagles, 17-8, back on April 17 in the lone meeting between the two teams this season.
