Lakewood, N.J. -
Samantha Fohrman, the newly-minted CACC Pitcher of the Year, fired a complete-game one-hitter Friday as Georgian Court University dismissed the University of the Sciences, 8-0 (5 inn.), in the 2021 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball Championship Tournament quarterfinals.
Fohrman (5.0 IP, 6 K) yielded a lead-off single to
Gabrielle Simms (Jr.-Phoenixville, Pa.) on the first pitch of the game before proceeding to retire the next 15 Devils in a row en route to the sophomore's 14th win (14-1) of the season.
In a contest that remained scoreless for the first three-and-a-half frames, the Lions cracked the seal in the bottom of the fourth with five runs on five hits. Georgian Court proceeded to bring the game to an abrupt conclusion in the following stanza as GCU brought across three more tallies in the fifth to secure the squad its 15th mercy-rule triumph of the year.
The top-seeded Lions rapped 11 hits in the rout, led by
Elisa Lopez and her perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate.
Alyssa Herrera (2-for-4, 2B) and
Taylor Barraza (1-2, 2B) collected two RBI apiece while
Malia Black went 2-for-3 with a run-batted-in and a pair of tallies of her own.
Kiara Meikle enjoyed a multi-hit showing (2-for-3, R) as the freshman got the start in center-field for the home team.
Georgian Court (32-4), ranked #24 in the nation, will now host #5 Post University (19-9) Monday at 3:00 p.m. in the CACC semifinals. The Lions swept the Eagles in a conference twin-bill last Friday on the road, 3-2 and 10-2 ( 6 inn.).
